South Bound Brook, NJ
This unique precinct integrates well into the structure of the established cemetery while addressing a number of site issues. A tall bronze cross, reminiscent of elaborate forged crosses found atop domed churches in Ukraine, anchors the memorial garden. Trees on two sides of the garden orient the memorial space toward the landmark chapel while screening utilitarian buildings from view. The separateness of the memorial garden on the other two sides is more subtlely established by a stone walkway, which allows for the continuity of the aisle system within the cemetery. The walkway ends in a small plaza which accommodates a bench and table for contemplation. The primary entrance into the garden, signaled by the cross, is from a diagonal footpath leading from the chapel to the consistory buildings across a bridge. Ukrainian inscriptions and floral folk motifs etched into stone panels and grave ledgers express the immigrant story of this family.
