Silver Spring, MD
The Kurylas Studio was asked to step in when this unique log structure, built in the authentic style of churches in the Carpathian Mountains, was partially completed. Building code and accessibility issues were resolved in order to obtain occupancy. Narthex, Confessional, and Choir Stair, as well as wood paneling for the stud wall portions of the structure, were designed to give the appearance of log construction. Stone foundations, wood porches and copper domes, conceived to be faithful to precedent, complete the exterior.
Bethesda, MD
Rustic pavilion with living, kitchen and bathing functions is intended to seem as if it grew out of stone ruins. Elaborate measures were taken to preserve existing mature trees as close as 2 feet from the new structure. Heavy stone walls are set atop a 16” thick concrete slab poured on undisturbed grade, which is cantilevered off of 10 helical piers inset four feet from the perimeter of the structure.
